Ian (left) and Chris (right) with their Grandfather’s medals visiting the Museum and Alec Awcock Snr with his daughter Phyllis (Ian’s birth mother) and Alec Jnr (Chris’ father)
On 5th May the Museum had a visit from cousins Ian Christensen and Chris Awcock who are seen here with their Grandfather’s medals from both World Wars. Their Grandfather, Alec Awcock, had a distinguished career beginning when he enlisted in the 4th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment the day after war was declared in 1914. He went on to serve in Gallipoli and France then after the war ended, served with the RAF until 1930. He re-enlisted in the RAF for another 4 years in 1938. Alec received the 1914-18 Star, The British War Medal, The Victory Medal (United Kingdom) and The Territorial Force Efficiency Medal from World War I and the Defence Medal and the War Medal for his Second World War service. The visit was made all the more poignant by the fact that Ian was adopted at a very early age and grew up in Canada, where he still lives. He was unaware of his birth family history until relatively recently and so it is very fitting that we see them both here with their Grandfather’s medals which Chris’ father donated to the Museum over 40 years ago.
